What are kids thinking about on St. Patrick's Day?
I remember what I was thinking about as a kid. Not getting pinched! Here's how it worked when I was a kid: People wear green. If the color green is VISIBLE, other people can't pinch you. Even if it's tiny, but can be seen, you should be safe.
Of course, if you either forget or refuse to wear green, you are fair game. However, if someone isn't paying close enough attention, and they pinch you even if you DO have on green - well, you can retaliate. Most of the pinching is mild, but sometimes - it can be brutal!
A Song to Celebrate St. Patrick's - the Fun Way!
I created this easy, fun piano song in SIX levels. Why? St. Patrick's day is usually around spring break time in the US. Students are kind of antsy, and looking forward to summer break! I wanted several levels so I could make this song EASY for everyone. That meant, they could learn it fast!

What’s Inside: six levels of the same tune- Pre-reading through intermediate. All levels except intermediate are in a minor, all white keys. Easy levels feature quarter and half notes with only four white keys. Advanced levels feature an easily taught syncopated rhythm, with lots of repetition in the phrases.
Who’s it for: any piano student, beginners through intermediate.
Challenges: 3/4 time for beginners and elementary students; syncopation (eighth, quarter, eighth pattern) for late elementary and intermediate students. I teach it by rote, using the Kodaly syllables “syn-co-pah”. You could also make up any words to go with this rhythm to reinforce learning.
Studio-tested, this is a well-loved song! It has an understandable meaning behind it - that kids (and all of us) should wear green on St. Patrick’s Day to avoid getting pinched! I do have to explain this tradition to some of my younger students, but they quickly catch on.
